The Future of Enterprise Software
The landscape of the enterprise software industry has changed considerably since the 1990's boom of client-server software. Today the industry is concentrated into a few vendors selling familiar software packages built from various 20 year-old technologies. However, today the industry sits at the brink of another set of changes that will reshape it once again. Our speaker, Doug Potter, is the author of the industry reference guide, Automated Accounting Systems and Procedures Handbook, and has been a professor at University of California, Irvine. Under Newport Consulting Group, Mr. Potter conducted a series of seminars on the emerging new technologies for enterprise software. Today he works with the Microsoft Dynamics series of products.

“Sweeper”: Implementing an Interactive Exception Reporting System
Monitoring by Exception is the practice of having “the system” scour your data for errors; a person is alerted only when something is wrong. Users are saved from having to pour over reports and look for anything out of the ordinary. In this session, we will look at how one company has implemented an Exception Reporting engine (“Sweeper”) that constantly analyzes data from throughout the SL system, freeing users for more advanced tasks. The system is built on top of SharePoint, allowing users to track comments and collaborate on resolution for each problem that is uncovered. Since the tool is based on the SharePoint framework, all of the rich feature-sets, such as Issue Tracking, Views, and Alerting are leveraged, resulting in an interactive tool that is easily extensible to meet many needs. The concepts in this session will be broadly applicable, but we will spend time in the details: VB code, SQL queries, SharePoint structure, and web service XML/CAML calls.
